This series was inspired by my background as a geologist. And influenced by my husband's recent foray into the ancient skill of blacksmithing.
Try to imagine your world without iron, plastics or concrete. Every single thing you touch in your day has been in contact with iron. Everything.
Our current level of industry and advancement is built on iron. Without it there can be no industry, no massive multistorey buildings, no cars, no trains, no intricate scientific machinery. Our massive economically-accessible iron ore deposits are, in many places, a result of life. Cyanobacteria, releasing oxygen into the seawater millions of years ago, caused a chemical reaction that formed banded ironstones. Other types of iron ore are of lesser quality and are much smaller. Life also gave us: oil, methane gas, lime, chalk, marble and coal, to name a few. Lime is a key component of concrete. Oil creates plastics.
Now imagine a world with none of those things. And then think of the repercussions if someone found an iron deposit.
The name for the main character, Alere, was that of a business in our work customer database. I just thought it sounded like a nice girl's name.
